This week, the Census Bureau released their Vintage 2024 population estimates, which reflect a methodological change to the way net international migration is estimated. This change resulted in an increase in the state’s population estimate for the past few years. Here are some key highlights from the Vintage 2024 population estimates: 

• The Census Bureau adjusted the Vintage 2024 net international migration estimate for the nation upward, accounting for a recent increase in humanitarian migrants.  

• This national increase in net international migration was distributed down to the states, but the Census Bureau is researching ways to distribute it more accurately. 

• Connecticut’s total population estimate increased by 32,046 residents between July 1, 2023, and July 1, 2024.  

• The increase in Connecticut’s total population was due almost entirely to estimated international migration.
