New Analysis of Nursing Data in Connecticut in 2023

We are excited to release and share a new analysis of Connecticut’s 2023 Nursing Education data! Here are some highlights from the data story: 

• Average nursing licensure examination (NCLEX) pass rates increased between the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 reporting periods for RN pre-licensure programs across all degree types. In the 2023-2024 reporting period, average pass rates for RN programs were between 94% and 97% for all degree types. 

• While the number of seats available for new RN pre-licensure students in baccalaureate and accelerated baccalaureate degree programs has increased in almost every year since 2017, student enrollment has not kept pace with this increase in capacity. In 2023, 10% of available seats in baccalaureate degree programs and 14% of available seats in accelerated baccalaureate programs were unfilled. 

• The number of RN pre-licensure program graduates has increased by 26% over the past 6 years. 

• The number of LPN program graduates increased by 25% between2022 and 2023, despite a trend of declining LPN program graduates since 2019.  

Our analysis examines students and faculty at Registered Nurse (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) pre-licensure education programs across the state between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023. While CTData released an analysis of 2022 nursing education data in October of this year, this report is more recent, using the nursing data from 2023. This work was done in partnership with the Connecticut Center for Nursing Workforce. The data used in this report are from a statewide survey completed by deans and directors of RN and LPN pre-licensure nursing education programs.
